LOYALTY VS. CONSCIENCE

The response of the opposition to the primary-election victory of Republican Sen. John Warner was on the one hand predictable, while on the other hand rather telling in that his foes continue to ignore the obvious or choose to focus on the ``party loyalty'' issue.

Although loyalty is a highly desirable characteristic, conscientious behavior or actions would (one would hope) supplant the call for loyalty when that call is in conflict with conscience.

While conscience is an inborn ersonal value, i.e., ``to thine own self be true,'' loyalty is a learned attribute and, at times, that same ``loyalty'' can be a double-edged sword with a ``gang mentality.''

Individual conscience is what inspires a decision that feels right for that individual. Voting your conscience is a virtue that should not be scorned.
