J.T. ELISTON OVERBY SR.

Deacon J.T. Eliston ``Bubba'' Overby Sr., 83, of the 1700 block of Weaver St., died June 15, 1996, in Chesapeake Health Care.

Mr. Overby, a native of Norfolk, was a member and trustee of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Norfolk. He was a member of the senior choir, adult bible class, teacher, and member of the C.C. Bell Brotherhood. He was a long time member of Ebenezer Lodge (NU)66, Prince Hall Masons, and the Tidewater Metro Laymens League, the Broadlawn Senior Citizens Club. Over the years, he was employed by the Norfolk Naval Base, Portsmouth Naval Yard, Barnes Box Factory, and the Journal and Guide.

Survivors include his wife for over 62 years, Sallie Smith Overby; a daughter, Beryl O. Howcott of Chesapeake; three sons, Judge Thomas Eliston Overby Jr. of Norfolk, Oscar Darryl Overby of Cranberry, N.J., Joseph Gerald Overby of Chesapeake; an attentive sister, Beryl Downing of Norfolk; a brother, Jesse Overby; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Horace Downing; and a host of cousins, relatives and friends. He was predeceased by a son, Wilbert Overby Sr.; a daughter, Janice O. Darden; a sister, Lucille O. Sumler; and his parents, Martha Overby and Thomas Overby.

The funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday by Dr. Charles Hart in Mount Zion Baptist Church. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be today from 2:30 to 8 p.m. at Pretlow's Funeral Home and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon at the church. Family and friends will assemble at 1722 Weaver St., Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. for the procession to the church.
