A 22-year-old man was critically injured Sunday night when the car he was riding in swerved to try to avoid a dog, hit two trees and ended up in a water-filled ditch.
The 20-year-old driver was also injured, and traffic was tied up for nearly four hours while crews worked to cut the two victims from the car.
The accident happened about 6:30 p.m. on U.S. Route 58.
David Pharr of Norfolk was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for head and leg injuries.
Jacquel S. Macklin, also of Norfolk, was taken to Obici Hospital.
Their 1989 Volkswagen sedan was traveling east. Both victims were wearing seat belts, police said.
