SPECIAL REPORT: THE YEAR IN HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

THE ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

Angela Hucles Senior, Norfolk Academy

Her place in history is being decided, but her impact on local soccer is no contest.

Norfolk Academy's Angela Hucles is the all-time leading scorer in South Hampton Roads history, with 204 goals and 106 assists during a varsity career that started in the seventh grade. Bulldogs coach Kevin Sims expects her to be among the top 15 scorers all-time and has filed the paperwork to put her in the national record books.

Her senior year alone was the greatest of the five: 52 goals and 13 hat tricks in 23 games. The three-time Virginian-Pilot girls soccer player of the year, and first-team Parade Magazine and Umbro All-American, will play in the Puma Cup this month, a national tournament for soccer's elite.

Also a two-time second-team All-Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools pick in basketball and the MVP of the 1995 TCIS tournament, Hucles has accepted a scholarship to play soccer at the University of Virginia. Anthony King Senior, Granby

Speed, explosiveness, character and class tightly bundled in a 5-9, 160-pound frame built for performance.

That is Granby's Anthony King.

King's big year began in the fall when he committed to Penn State as a defensive back before the season. He went on to be named All-Tidewater and all-state. As a quarterback he passed for 965 yards and seven TDs and rushed for 755 yards and 10 TDs in leading the Comets to the Eastern District title.

In basketball he made the smooth transition to role player, without forfeiting any of his leadership qualities. King averaged 7.3 points, 6 assists and 3 steals per game.

But his pure athletic skills were made to showcase in track. King set school records in the high jump (6-10), long jump (23-4 1/2) and triple jump (45-0) in leading Granby to its first district title in two decades. At the Eastern Region meet, he won the high jump and was second in the 100 and the long jump. ILLUSTRATION: [Color Photos]
