The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has targeted 17 localities for inclusion in this year's Pesticide Disposal Program. Included are Surry County and the towns entirely within its borders.
The program is designed to assist agricultural producers, pesticide dealers, and pest control firms with the proper disposal of unusable, unwanted, outdated or banned pesticides. Now in its sixth year, the disposal program is a cooperative effort of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the Virginia Pesticide Control Board, the Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services, Virginia Cooperative Extension, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality.
Commercial and private pesticide applicators in the selected localities who want to participate in the program must contact their local extension agent or the Office of Pesticide Services, (804) 371-0152, by July 1, to indicate their interest and to complete a survey sheet on the amounts and types of pesticides for disposal.
The free program is open to anyone who uses pesticides commercially for farms, nurseries, greenhouses, lawn care companies, pest control firms or pesticide dealers. The project is not intended for the disposal of household pesticides held by private citizens.
The tentative collection dates are September and October 1996. For information, call Elaine Lidholm, 371-8579. by CNB
