BOATS REPORT FAIR FISHING, BUT PIER CATCHES WERE SLOW

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was slow at most locations Tuesday.

Lots of skates and a few bottom fish were taken on Kitty Hawk Pier.

Avalon Pier reported a few bluefish, some small gray trout, several sea mullet and skates landed.

Fishermen on Nags Head Pier caught plenty of skates, some mullet and very small gray trout.

Skates and a few keeper bluefish were landed on Jennette's Pier.

Anglers on Outer Banks Pier caught skates, sea mullet and ling cod off and on during the day.

South of Oregon Inlet, Rodanthe Pier reported cobia weighing 38 and 40 pounds landed late Monday afternoon. Scattered bottom fish were caught Tuesday. Small spot were taken throughout the day on Avon Pier.

Fishermen on Frisco Pier caught good numbers of small spot, a few gray trout, some sea mullet and a couple of keeper flounder Tuesday. The water in the area was fairly dirty.

Surf fishing along the beach from Corolla to Oregon Inlet was slow. The only action reported consisted of a few small spot and sea mullet.

Good catches of small bottom fish were reported from the catwalk on the south end of the Bonner Bridge, and also from the area around the old ferry boat channel Monday afternoon and Tuesday.

A few trout and a couple of black drum also were landed in the Oregon Inlet area.

Scattered small spot and sea mullet were beached by surfcasters from Rodanthe to Buxton.

Plenty of Spanish mackerel and scattered bluefish were landed late Monday afternoon in the Cape Point area, with the best action just south of Cape Point. A few bottom fish were landed during the day Tuesday.

Small bluefish and a few keeper flounder were caught by surfcasters along the beach from Frisco to False Point.

Spanish mackerel, bluefish and a few cobia were landed by charter boats fishing inshore around the Oregon Inlet.

The Free Agent landed a good catch of 40- to 50-pound channel bass while fishing outside the inlet Monday afternoon.

Headboats operating around Oregon Inlet landed fair numbers of croaker and pigfish.

Blue water charters southeast of Oregon Inlet reported fair tuna and dolphin fishing.

A number of billfish were released, including two sailfish and a white marlin by the Obsession, and a sailfish by the CJ-IV.

Dolphin fishing was good off Hatteras around the Rockpile. Charters also reported good billfishing below the Rockpile. Most of the action was provided by the white marlin.

The water temperature was 58 degrees Tuesday at the Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 79 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
