N-SA PITCHER PUTNAM CHOSEN ALL-STAR TEAM CAPTAIN

For the fourth straight year, Sarah Putnam of Nansemond-Suffolk Academy was selected by the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools' league softball coaches as the All-Star team's honorary captain.

Putnam, a senior pitcher who will attend the University of Maryland on a softball scholarship, was also named a Virginia Independent Schools All-State selection for the fourth straight year.

Lea Wilson of N-SA and Devon Chapman of Norfolk Collegiate also earned All-TCIS and All-State first team honors.

Chapman, the Oaks' only first-team member, finished with a 0.40 ERA and allowed on 46 hits in 136 innings while striking out 235 batters. Chapman also batted .353 with two triples and a pair of doubles.

Also making the first team was Evan Pitler of Norfolk Academy. She's a junior catcher who batted .366 with 14 RBIs. Pitler threw out 22 runners who were attempting to steal.

Putnam led the Saints to their fourth straight TCIS title and tournament crowns with a 14-2 record. In 96.2 innings she had 103 strikeouts, allowed just 41 hits, walked only 10 batters and had a 0.51 ERA.

Wilson, a three-time All-TCIS selection and N-SA's clean-up batter, had a and a home run. She stole 18 bases and scored 26 runs. As the Saints' catcher, she threw out 23 runners and had only one passed ball.

Earning first team honors for Greenbrier Christian were Ginny Fletcher, Aly Mazur and Tara Garlow.

Mazur, a repeat performer, hit .388 and was 8-3 on the mound with 50 strikeouts.

Garlow, who earned honorable mention last season, led the Gators with a scored.

Fletcher, only an eighth-grader, was 10-4 on the mound. She fanned 112 batters in 74 innings of work and notched a .452 batting average.

Earning honors for Catholic were Erin Osbourne and Sam Green.

Osbourne, the Crusaders shortstop and leadoff batter, had a .438 batting average and a .701 on-base percentage. The three-time All-TCIS pick also scored 28 runs. Green, a two-time All-TCIS selection, led Catholic with a .463 average with five home runs, six triples and two doubles. She posted a .609 on-base percentage.

Tryouts for the Commonwealth Games field hockey team will be held

Saturday at 9 a.m. at Norfolk Academy. Players should be prepared

for a full workout. Ninth-graders through graduated high school

seniors are eligible. The Commonwealth Games begin July 13 in
