CARLTON T. SMITH

Deacon Charles T. ``Buck'' Smith, of 29000 block of Arlington Road, departed this life on June 16, 1996, in Sentara Bayside Hospital, Virginia Beach.

A native of Kiptopeake, Va., he was the son of the late Professor William and Essie Smith. Among his many attributes was his continuous and upstanding membership in Capeville Baptist Church where he served on the deacon and trustee boards and served as church treasurer. Using his God given talents as a musician, he gave unselfish years of service to the senior choir, Star Light Chorus, the Gospel Echoes and the Spiritual Sons. Deacon Smith was also a member of the National Shriners Organization and held a 33 degree rank in the Masonic Temple, Scottish Rites Affiliate. Buck as he was lovingly known was an avid Bible scholar, holding Bible study in his home on Wednesday evenings for many years. Carlton was a patriarch who served his country in the U.S. Navy. Diligently working for 56 years as a brickmason, he worked with the construction of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel.

He leaves a legacy of wisdom, love and fond memories to be treasured by his wife, Alitha; two daughters, Wilhelmenia Smaw of Virginia Beach, and Mary Carlene Pearson of Emporia, Va.; two sons-in-law; and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Capeville Baptist Church, the Rev. Kelvin Jones officiating. Interment to follow with military honors in the Capeville Baptist Church Cemetery. Deacon Smith may be viewed at the Morris Funeral Home, Nassawadox, on Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the hour of service at the church. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the staff of the Pearson-Bond Funeral Service, Emporia.
