SOUTHEASTERLY WINDS BRING BETTER FISHING ON THE PIERS

Pier fishing along the northern beaches improved a little Wednesday with the arrival of southeasterly winds.

A few spot, croaker, sea mullet, bluefish and small trout were taken on Kitty Hawk Pier. Skates were noticeably absent from catches after several days of abundance.

Avalon Pier reported a few bluefish, nice sea mullet and small gray trout landed.

Small gray trout and a few nice sea mullet were caught by anglers on Nags Head Pier off and on during the day.

Jennette's Pier anglers landed some nice sea mullet, small blues and spot in the afternoon. Fishing during the morning was slow.

Spot fishing was good on Outer Banks Pier most of the day. Some tailor bluefish and a few sea mullet also were taken.

On Hatteras Island, fishermen on Rodanthe Pier landed a few spot and croaker while watching boats out of casting range catch some nice cobia.

Anglers on Avon Pier caught spot, small gray trout, a few sea mullet and some flounder.

Fishing was slow on Frisco Pier, with only a few spot, bluefish and flounder taken.

Some small bottom fish and a few bluefish were landed by surfcasters along the northern beaches.

Some small bottom fish were caught from the north side of Oregon Inlet. Spot, small croaker and some black drum were landed from the south side.

Croaker, spot, small gray trout, a few flounder and tailor bluefish were caught along the beach from Rodanthe to Buxton. A few Spanish mackerel were landed during the early afternoon when inshore water in the area cleared.

Some Spanish mackerel were landed Tuesday afternoon at Cape Point. A few puppy drum, gray trout, Spanish mackerel and pompano were taken Wednesday.

Scattered spot, bluefish and flounder were landed along the beach from Frisco to Hatteras Island.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was good Wednesday. Nice-sized Spanish mackerel and small bluefish were plentiful.

Excellent catches of cobia were reported from around the boiler, south of the inlet. Some king mackerel also were landed.

Headboats around Oregon Inlet landed croaker and bluefish during the morning, and some nice keeper flounder on the afternoon trips. Some big croaker weighing more than two pounds, along with fair numbers of keeper flounder were taken by boaters near the Manns Harbor bridge.

Dolphin fishing was good and tuna fishing was fair off Oregon Inlet. Several billfish were released, including three white marlin by the Sea Toy and a blue marlin by the Carolinean.

Scattered dolphin, a few tuna and some wahoo were taken by the Hatteras fleet. A blue marlin was released by the Marlin Mania and a sailfish by the Connector.

The water temperature was 60 degrees Wednesday at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck, and 79 degrees at Frisco Pier on Hatteras Island. by CNB
