Fair pay for council

As we get older we forget the important lessons our parents taught us. Second only to ``If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all'' my mother taught me that ``You get what you pay for.''

Why do we think that our City Council members should work for such low wages?

The Tuesday night meetings are the only opportunity the public has to view the council at work, creating the impression it is a four-hour-a-week job. This is far from the truth. I have seldom called a council member when he or she was not on the phone talking to someone about city business. The pay the council receives barely covers expenses such as dinners they attend, many miles they drive, donations to civic fund-raisers and many more items asked of them daily. If we want a devoted council that can take the time needed to look at an issue in depth, we must compensate them for their time.

I thank them for their hard work, even when they don't agree with me. Don't let this become an issue to beat up on the council for past personal differences!

Harding Drive Stoplight needed

I'm upset that there is no stoplight at the intersection of Bruce Road and Bruin Drive.

It is a very busy intersection, and there have been many accidents in the past few years. This is a main intersection used by cars and buses to get to Western Branch schools.

The problem could be solved by putting a stoplight at this intersection. This is a very dangerous intersection, and a stoplight could possibly save some lives.

Meadowwood Court Community service

In The Clipper, you had a piece on volunteer labor helping shape the Chesapeake Arboretum. It was mentioned that volunteers came from the USS Bainbridge and that they love doing community service. I know that they also volunteer their services delivering meals for the Portsmouth Meals on Wheels program.

The ship (according to the article) is being decommissioned. Wouldn't it be nice if you and possibly The Portsmouth Currents had an article about the volunteer services by these young men and women from around the country. It would be a tribute as they are dispersed throughout the Navy when their ship is finally decommissioned.

With all the criticism of our young people, a pat on the back is certainly deserved. I am sure their commanding officer would be only too glad to cooperate with you.
