DIVERSE AND TALENTED INFIELD SELECTED BY BEACH COACHES

BROOKS ROBINSON, Mark Belanger, Davey Johnson and Boog Powell didn't do it.

Neither did Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Dave Concepcion and Tony Perez, nor did Ron Cey, Bill Russell, Davey Lopes and Steve Garvey.

None of those famous infielders ever started a Major League all-star game together.

So when the Beach District coaches voted Cox's starting infield of third baseman Aaron Strausbaugh, shortstop Tim Lavigne, second baseman Ted Tignor and first baseman David Wilson to the all-district first team - and threw in Jason Dubois at pitcher and outfield, to boot - it was recognition not easily or often tendered.

``It's a genuine tribute,'' Cox coach John Ingram said. ``They've done a great job and the other coaches saw that and respected that.''

Cox, which beat First Colonial in a playoff for the regular-season championship and then won the district tournament, region and state titles, also swept the individual awards. Dubois was voted player of the year and Ingram was voted coach of the year.

Dubois was 8-0 with a 1.22 ERA entering the state semifinals. He was batting .513 with 7 home runs and 44 RBIs.

``What can I say about Jason?,'' Ingram said. ``He's a great kid. He's done a great job and he deserves the award.''

Lavigne sported a .452 average with 8 home runs and 34 RBIs. He led Cox with 42 hits and 43 runs scored.

Strausbaugh, the only repeat first-team selection, was batting .378 with 3 home runs and 28 RBIs and led the team in walks with 31.

Tignor, promoted from the second team, was batting .366 with 39 runs scored and had committed only three errors.

Wilson was batting .352 with 26 RBIs and also had only three errors.

The rest of the first team consists of three players from First Colonial, two from Ocean Lakes and one from Salem.

Representing the Patriots are outfielder Jeff Butler, catcher Ryan Dunbar and pitcher Ed Manley.

David Hierholzer, a senior, is the designated hitter.

Butler batted .476 with 26 RBIs and set a school record with 7 home runs. Dunbar batted .381 with four home runs and 23 RBIs. Manley was 7-1 with a 1.48 ERA.

Representing Ocean Lakes are outfielder Rob Robinson and utilityman James Walsh. Robinson, a second-team pick last year, batted .367 with 19 runs scored and 21 RBIs. Walsh, a shortstop and pitcher batted .413 and had an 18-game hitting streak. He was 4-2 on the mound.

Hierholzer batted .310. ILLUSTRATION: ``It's a genuine tribute,'' said Cox's John Ingram,

voted coach of the year. ``They've done a great job and the other

coaches saw that and respected that.''
