John E. Yates, 79, of the 700 block of Hillwell Road, died suddenly, Wednesday June 19, 1996, in Chesapeake General Hospital.
Mr. Yates was retired from Southern Dairies and the Chesapeake School Board. He was also the owner of Johnnie's Lawn Mower Repair Service. Mr. Yates, a native of Pollocksville, N.C., was the son of the late Willie B. and Maggie W. Yates.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Blanche Windley Yates; three children, Linda Yates Hestad, Robert E. Yates and his wife, Sue, all of Chesapeake, Billy R. Yates and his wife, Jill, of Oxfordshire, England; two grandchildren, R. Eric Yates and his wife, Tracy, Stephanie Y. Harris and her husband, Ed and a great-granddaughter, Kayle Harris, all of Chesapeake; three sisters, Eddie Arthur, Lillie Humphrey, Pearl White, all of Pollocksville; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by three brothers, Harvey, Brown and Nelson Yates; four sisters, Gladys Holland, Lucile Samuels, Katie Thomas and Ruby Wilson; and his son-in-law, John S. Hestad.
Burial with graveside service only will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens with the Rev. William Boldin of Grace Lutheran Church and the Rev. Bron Forrester, Chaplain, Chesapeake General Hospital, officiating. Friends may join the family from 7:30 to 9 p.m. today at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge. Flowers are welcome or memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
