Local officials received final approval Thursday for a $240,000 federal grant to renovate a historic train station on Main Street.
The Commonwealth Transportation Board approved 33 statewide projects costing a total of $6 million. The Suffolk project was the only one approved for a Hampton Roads community.
Two groups - Save Our Station and the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society - plan to remodel the former CSX depot at the entrance to the downtown business district into a visitor's center and museum for railroad memorabilia.
The two groups will receive funds through the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act for the renovation. SOS and the city each will contribute $30,000. by CNB
