A Hampton man was killed Thursday morning when his car, traveling at a high speed, struck a pickup truck and a boundary wall before flipping over on I-664 about one-half mile south of the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel.
John R. Olivarez, 28, who was not wearing a seatbelt, died after he was partially thrown from the vehicle as it skidded about 400 feet after flipping over.
Also injured in the accident was Theodore A. Kelley, 35, of Newport News, who was sent to Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News for minor injuries.
Kelley, in a 1993 pickup truck, was traveling south on I-664 and exiting the bridge-tunnel when Olivarez attempted to pass on the right in a 1982 Chevrolet. Olivarez struck Kelley in the rear, ran up the traffic boundary along the right of the bridge and flipped over.
Tammy Van Dame, spokeswoman for the Virginia State Police, said Olivarez was going at least 75 mph when he struck the truck. Alcohol was involved, Van Dame said.
Traffic slowed for about 2 1/2 hours on the bridge-tunnel Thursday morning.
