Michael Tate, petty officer third class, says hello to his

6-month-old son, Alex. The elder Tate is stationed on the dock

landing ship Oak Hill, which arrived at Little Creek Naval

Amphibious Base on Thursday. The Oak Hill is commanded by Cmdr.

Michael A. Durnan and was commissioned June 8 in New Orleans.

Vice Adm. Richard W. Mies became the 25th Commander of the Submarine

Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet and Commander Submarines Allied Command,

U.S. Atlantic, on Friday. He relieves Vice Adm. George W. Emery, who

commanded the Atlantic Fleet's 61 submarines for the past three

years. Adm. Jay Johnson, nominated by President Clinton to become

the chief of naval operations, attended the change of command at the

Norfolk Naval Base. Mies, a native of Chicago and 1967 Naval

Academy graduate, commanded the attack submarine Sea Devil,

Submarine Squadron 12 and most recently served in the Mediterranean

as commander Submarine Group Eight. by CNB
