Hampton Roads grew by 764 people this week with the arrival of two of the Navy's newest ships - the dock landing ship Oak Hill, which arrived at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base on Thursday, and the guided-missile destroyer Cole, which arrived at the Norfolk Naval Station on Friday.
Together the crews also bring about 320 family members to the area, along with a combined payroll of $26 million.
The Cole, commanded by Cmdr. M. Stewart O'Bryan, was commissioned June 8, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. It is named for Sgt. Darrel Samuel Cole, a Marine who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for action in World War II. See related photographs/B3 ILLUSTRATION: BILL TIERNAN color photos/The Virginian-Pilot
Jaleanna Way, 12, of Colorado Springs, Colo., (top photo), catches
sight of her father, Petty Officer First Class Mark Way, aboard the
Cole. She hadn't seen him in two years. At left, Mark Way returns
the greeting. His wife, Charlotte - who is Jaleanna's stepmother -
moved to Chesapeake five months ago in preparation for the Cole
coming to this area. by CNB
