FANS DONATED: The Community Electric Cooperative has donated nine fans to local agencies on aging as part of the 1996 Fan Care Program, which provides free fans to elderly people most in need.

Three fans each were donated to Isle of Wight and Southampton counties and the city of Suffolk. Community Electric Cooperative serves portions of Suffolk and the counties of Isle of Wight, Southampton, Sussex and Surry.

CREDIT PROS MEETING: The Suffolk Chapter of Credit Professionals International will meet at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at Bunny's Restaurant on Wilroy Road.

Susan Simpkins of the Bank of Suffolk will discuss ``Tips To Help Young People Deal With Credit.''

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARDS: The Hampton Roads Sanitation District recently honored 217 local businesses for exemplary compliance with the district's Industrial Wastewater Pretreatment Program, which is an Environmental Protection Agency-approved initiative designed to control the discharge of potentially harmful substances into the environment.

Since the implementation of the Industrial Wastewater Pretreatment Program, incoming flow at HRSD's plants has seen dramatic decrease in the quantity of harmful substances. The program received the 1995 National Pretreatment Excellence Award from the EPA for the best control program of its size in the country.

Gold awards were given to businesses with a perfect compliance record and no violations. Silver awards were given to Significant Industrial Users, larger industries, industries in specific categories defined by the EPA or those that discharge more than 25,000 gallons per day of process wastewater, who accrued five or fewer violations. Silver awards also went to Non-Significant Industrial Users, smaller industries, that had three or fewer violations.

The Suffolk businesses with exemplary records are:

Gold - City of Suffolk, Suffolk School Board, Dominion Lands Inc., Marine Leasing Services Inc., Penske Truck Leasing Co., Planters Lifesavers Co., Rillco Inc., Southeastern Public Service Authority, Regional Landfill and Thomas J. Lipton Inc.

Silver - Allied Colloids Inc., Artis Septic Tank Cleaning Service, Suffolk News Herald, and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. No. 1687.

PROFESSIONALS MEETING: The Suffolk Association of Educational Office Professionals met recently at Lakeland High School. This association is newly formed and has 40 members comprised of office professionals of the Suffolk Public School System.

The speaker was Ross Boone, director of Academic Programs at the Oliver K. Hobbs Campus of Paul D. Camp Community College. Entertainment was provided by students from the Suffolk public schools.

Superintendent Joyce Trump was presented the ``Administrator of the Year'' award. The award for ``Educational Office Professional of the Year'' was given to Kendra McLeod.

Officers for the 1996-98 term are Kendra McLeod, president; JoAnne Miltier, vice president; Aundra Fields, secretary; and Janice Roberts, treasurer.

FRANKLIN

RIBBON CUTTING: The Franklin-Southampton Area Chamber of Commerce will sponsor a ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Franklin-Southampton Commerce Center, 121 Commerce Park Road, next to Franklin Garden Center.

ANNUAL MEETING: James P. Councill III, CLU, ChFC, of Franklin attended the 1996 Million Dollar Round Table annual meeting recently in Anaheim, Calif.

Councill, a 20-year MDRT member, was among approximately 5,000 Round Table members, spouses, special guests and speakers from more than 40 nations who were in attendance.

About 100 professional, non-member and MDRT member speakers discussed subjects of vital concern to those in the life insurance industry. Experts in estate planning, taxes, business and law shared their knowledge. by CNB
