BUSINESS BRIEFS

CLEANER WATER: Nineteen Portsmouth industrial and commercial water users have been cited for exemplary compliance with the Hampton Roads Sanitation District's industrial wastewater pre-treatment program.

The program is an effort to control discharge of potentially harmful substances into the environment.

The program has decreased dramatically the quantity of such substances in HRSD's incoming flow. For example, there has been a 360 percent decrease in heavy metals.

The awards recognize the labor and costs of the winners in achieving compliance in the self-monitoring programs.

Gold awards, signifying perfect compliance records and no violations, went to Culpepper Radiator Service Inc., Hagwood's Inc., Interstate Nuclear Service Corp., Moon Engineering Co. Inc., Photo One Corp., Portsmouth General Hospital, Shared Hospital Service, Southeastern Public Service Authority Refuse Derived Fuel Plant and Western Branch Diesel.

Silver awards, signifying a small number of violations, went to Harris Co., Hoeschst Celanese Corp., Land-O-Sun Dairies Inc., Maryview Hospital, Norfolk Veneer Mills Inc., Metal Stamping Inc., U.S. Navy St. Julien's Creek Annex, Virginia International Terminals in Portsmouth, Wimbrough and Sons Inc., and Z. Artis Jr. Septic Tank Service.

NEW SHOES: Uniform Shoes and More has opened at 3218 Academy Ave. in the Churchland area.

Owned by Nahir P. Cowans, the store offers 15 percent off purchases by medical workers who have proper identification.

ON HIS OWN: Steve Heretick, who has been associated for four years with Moody, Striple and Kloeppel Ltd., has opened his own law offices for general legal services in the historic Neel House at 412 London Blvd.

Heretick, a native of Hopewell, was graduated from the College of William and Mary and the Villanova Law School. After serving as lead counsel in two federal mass-tort cases involving Amtrak derailments in 1991 in Newport News, he has been called to consult with the national news networks on transportation law issues. He appeared on a recent edition of ``Investigative Reports with Bill Kurtis,'' on which Heretick discussed railroad safety.

Heretick and his wife Stephanie are restoring the 18th century Neel House into a combination of living and office space.
