KNOOP AMONG W. BRANCH AWARD WINNERS

WESTERN BRANCH announced its spring sports award winners for the 1996 season.

Earning top honors in girls soccer were seniors Mimi Knoop, the most valuable offensive player, and Katherine Dalton, the top defensive player.

Knoop led the team with 12 goals and four assists. Dalton was a mainstay on defense and posted a 1.3 goals against average.

In boys soccer, Steve Collett took the MVP/Leadership award.

Erica Hudson was named the most valuable runner on the girls track team and seniors Calee Morris and Nicole Belote shared the most valuable award on the softball team.

Morris, a first team All-Region, All-Tidewater, All-Chesapeake and All-Southeastern District selection, hit .333 for the Bruins with eight RBIs.

Belote, the Chesapeake Player of the Year, as well as an All-Tidewater, All-Region and All-Southeastern District pick, hit .382 and had a .935 fielding percentage.

Here's a capsule look at the other award winners:

Girls Soccer: The Coaches Award went to Meg Wardell and Alicia Lang was named Most Improved.

Boys Soccer: Daniel Dussia was the Best All Around and Kenny Sloane was the Most Skilled.

Boys Tennis: Skip Williams was named the Most Outstanding; Ted Lee earned honors as the Most Improved; the Sportsmanship Award went to Damir Kvesic.

Girls Track: The Coaches Award went to Jennifer Westfall; Most Improved was Shenine Thimas; Angela Cusick earned the Outstanding Performance Award.

Boys Track: Idris Sherard was named Most Dedicated; Doug Casper was the Outstanding Newcomer; Outstanding Runners were Clayton Porter and Malik Cook; the Outstanding Performer in Field Events was Daryl Walton.

Baseball: Rookie of the Year honors went to Kevin Pearson; Stephen Gardner was the Offensive Player of the Year; Cory Bauswell and Pat Cusick shared the Most Dedicated award. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
