JOHN R. POPE

John Randolph ``Randy'' Pope, 46, died at his home in Virginia Beach on June 21, 1996. Randy was born in Miami Beach, Fla. He was a graduate of Norfolk Catholic High School and attended Virginia Wesleyan College.

Randy was a well known musician and composer in Virginia and the East Coast. He started as a violinist with the Norfolk Youth Orchestra and had a continuing career as a guitarist, drummer and vocalist with bands like The Town Cryers, The Machine, Headstone Circus, Bill Deal and the Rhondells, and was a founding member of Hotcakes. He and his bands recorded and toured the East Coast and were especially popular in Key West, Fla. Over the years, he was joined on stage by many national recording artists such as B.B. King, Grover Washington Jr., Kenny Loggins, Frank Zappa, Billy Joel and Dickie Betts.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Davis Pope; his mother and father, Helen McMahon and Cmdr. Nicholas J. Pope Jr. U.S. Navy (ret.) of Norfolk; two brothers, Timothy McMahon Pope and Peter C. Pope; six nephews and four nieces. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Anne ``Marnie'' Pope, and his brother, Nicholas John Pope III.

A Mass of the resurrection will be conducted in Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 12:30 p.m. Monday, June 24, 1996, by Father John J. Dorgan. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 5 to 7 p.m. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.
