Drivers heading through central Norfolk, get ready.
Starting Monday, the 26th Street bridge across the Lafayette River will narrow to one lane for 18 months of repair and renovations.
The $2.7 million project will include a new bridge deck, sidewalks, railings, lighting and renovation of the bridge's substructure.
A major overhaul of the bridge was needed to stop more deterioration and potential safety problems, city officials say. The bridge was built in 1938 and widened in 1949.
Drivers can use Tidewater Drive or the Granby Street Bridge instead. The 26th Street bridge will close completely to traffic for short intervals during repairs, but notice will be given, city officials say. by CNB
