Walter E. Hoffman, U.S. senior district judge for Virginia's Eastern District, has announced that he will give his professional papers to his alma mater, Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va.
The papers of the 1931 Washington and Lee law school graduate will be housed in Lewis Hall. The school's archives include the papers of former Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell Jr., a classmate and friend of Hoffman's.
Hoffman began practicing law in Norfolk after graduating from college. He became a U.S. district judge for Virginia's Eastern District in 1954 and served as chief judge from 1961 to 1973. He took senior judge status in 1974. by CNB
