CONSUMER NEWS

The Better Business Bureau of Greater Hampton Roads warns consumers of a bogus mailing from a Publishers Clearinghouse imitator with an address originating in San Jose, Calif. The letter advises recipients that they have won $100,000 and requests a $60 cash processing fee to be returned with the enclosed ``official statement of eligibility.''

Publishers Clearinghouse has confirmed to both the Council of Better Business Bureaus and the San Jose Better Business Bureau that this mailing is bogus. Postal inspectors have been notified and are working on the matter.

The BBB said consumers should beware of any cash giveaway or sweepstakes offers that involve an up-front, advance fee. It encourages consumers to investigate a company or report any losses in a prize scam by calling them at 627-5651.
