KILL DEVIL HILLS

AUTO THEFTS INCREASING: Kill Devil Hills police are reminding people to lock car doors and protect their valuables due to a rash of vehicle thefts.

Cars and trucks parked by cottages, on the street and along beach accesses are being burglarized. Many of the thefts involve stereos and related items.

Some $695 worth of property was reported stolen from several cars on June 16. The automobiles were parked at the Woodmere and 5th Street beach access.

That same day another vehicle larceny was reported in Kill Devil Hills, with $710 in undisclosed items stolen.

A compact disc player and CDs were taken from a vehicle parked on South Memorial Street sometime before 9:30 p.m. June 15, the time it was reported. Another nearby automobile had $25 in cash taken.

Other auto thefts include:

A ransacked purse and sunglasses reported stolen June 16 from an unlocked vehicle parked in a lot at the 6.5 Milepost on North Virginia Dare Trail. Loss to the victim was $303.

A cellular phone was taken and a dashboard damaged inside a vehicle on Windsong Court June 18.

A Jeep Wrangler parked in the driveway of a cottage on Ocean Acres Drive was damaged during a break-in reported 2:30 a.m. June 17. The console, stereo and speakers, tire cover and soft top for the Jeep were all stolen. Damage and losses are estimated at $1,250.

A surfboard was stolen from atop a car parked in the driveway of a cottage on Airstrip Road on June 18. The board is valued at $400.

In other burglaries, a home in the Sioux Street area was broken into on or around June 15, with $350 worth of merchandise stolen.

Also a 25-horsepower short shank Mercury outboard motor worth $2,500 was stolen on West Clark Street.

BEER BOTTLES CAUSE DAMAGE: Beer bottles damaged a car and a home in two separate incidents recently.

On June 16, at about midnight, a person threw a beer bottle at the tailgate of a truck around 12:20 a.m., causing about $500 in damage. The exact location in town was not available.

A beer bottle was thrown at a rental cottage on Carolina Drive sometime before 2:35 a.m. on June 15. Damage is estimated at $500.

ASSAULT WITH SKATEBOARD: A Kill Devil Hills teenager who allegedly tried to steal some shirts and a skateboard was charged with assault with a deadly weapon - a felony - for striking someone with the skateboard.

Jacques Isaac Ward, who is about 18 years old, also was charged with larceny and resisting, obstructing and delaying a law enforcement officer in the incident, about 5:25 a.m. June 16.

Ward allegedly tried to steal four shirts and a skateboard from a business and was detained by the owner. A scuffle ensued, and police said Ward struck the owner on the head with the skateboard. by CNB
