The burning of African-American churches is a heinous crime. Not only is it a destruction of valuable property, but it strikes at the very core of the African-American community.
American Jews can share the pain of our African-Americans brothers and sisters, and we join them in strongly condemning these acts of racial hatred. We are urging the attorney general and the secretary of the treasury to bring all of their resources to bear so that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
We strongly urge all the citizens of Hampton Roads to speak out against this outrage.
Racial hatred and religious discrimination are terrible stains on the fabric of American life. We must all strive to create an atmosphere of mutual respect and understanding between all Americans.
