JOHN B. POWELL

John Burn Powell, 85, of the 800 block of Waltham St., died June 22, 1996, in a local hospital.

Mr. Powell was born in Windsor, N.C., Bertie County, and was a member of First Baptist Church, Bute St., Norfolk. He was a retired truck driver for Pennsylvania Trucking Co. for 23 years after serving for 32 years. He was a member of the Teamster's Union and Progressive Lodge (NU)80. He was predeceased by his parents, Mary and Walter Powell, two sisters, Mildred Connor and Josephine Powell, and a brother, Willie Powell.

Survivors include his wife, Ethelene H. Powell; two daughters, Annette (Trina) Harold and Antonia (Tina) Hayes of Norfolk; two sons, Johnny E. (Boo-Lum) Hayes of Virginia Beach and Roland R. (Jap) Hayes of Hartford, Conn.; two sisters, Elmerine P. Green and Louise P. Stewart of Norfolk; two brothers, James O. Powell of St. Simons Island, Ga., and Martin E. Powell of Chesapeake; grandchildren, Daphne Turner of Petersburg, Va., Eunice C. Harold of Richmond, Norman (Sali) Harold of Norfolk, Tova L. Hayes of Greensboro, N.C.; and five great-grandchildren; two devoted daughters-in-law, Carolyn T. Hayes of Virginia Beach and Nancy R. Hayes of Hartford, Conn.; a devoted niece, Audrey E. Drake of Washington, D.C.; a devoted son-in-law, Roger W. Turner of Petersburg, Va.; and lifelong friend, Thomas E. Bullock of Chesapeake.

A funeral will be conducted Wednesday at noon by Dr. Robert Murray in First Baptist Church, Bute St., Norfolk. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Graves Funeral Home is in charge. The family will assemble at the residence. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. the day of the service. ILLUSTRATION: Photo<
