WEEKLY BRIEFING

SUBMARINE HOSTS GUESTS: The fast attack submarine Oklahoma City, based in Norfolk, left Port Everglades, Fla., June 18 with 80 youngsters and their parents aboard. Among the guests were children who survived the bombing, and children who lost parents, in the April 19, 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Also onboard were several children who are cancer patients, guests of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. While underway for the day, visitors had a chance to see how submariners live. The submarine dived, simulated torpedo launches and revealed sounds of the ocean on the sub's advanced sonar system.

VIETNAM VETERANS MEETING: The Virginia State Council of Vietnam Veterans of America Inc. will hold its annual meeting from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Holiday Inn, Route 29 and Odd Fellows Road, in Lynchburg. The state council will elect officers and discuss matters of interest to Vietnam veterans throughout the state. CHANGING TRAFFIC PATTERNS: People traveling to Fort Story Army Post should be aware of changing traffic patterns due to construction of a natural gas pipeline; changes will be in place for approximately one month, until July 24. Atlantic Avenue, going into Fort Story, and the West Gate entrance are the two areas most affected. For details, call 422-7696.

VETERANS WHEELCHAIR GAMES: The 16th National Veterans Wheelchair Games, the largest annual wheelchair sporting event in the country, will be held July 2-6 in Seattle, Wash. The games, presented by the Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Dept. of Veterans Affairs, are expected to draw more than 600 participants from the U.S., Puerto Rico and Great Britain. NAVY INTERNS GRADUATE: A graduation ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Friday , in the medical center auditorium, for 68 physicians who have successfully completed internships at Portsmouth Naval Medical Center. Others to be recognized include 30 physicians, seven dentists, four psychiatrists and four psychologists who have completed their three-year residency training at the medical center, as well as five Chaplain Corps officers who have completed the Pastoral Care Residency Program. The Portsmouth Naval Medical Center is one of three major teaching hospitals in the Navy.

COMINGS AND GOINGS

RETURNING:

Members of the 1st Fighter Wing have begun returning from Jordan, where they have been participating in the Airpower Expeditionary Force since March 29. About 600 airmen and 12 F-15s from Langley Air Force Base helped make up the expeditionary force, which supported Operation Southern Watch. More than 1,000 people are serving at a base in eastern Jordan, from which Operation Southern Watch enforces the United Nations-imposed no-fly zone south of the 32nd parallel in Iraq.

DEPARTING:

After more than 26 years of service to the Submarine Force, Atlantic Fleet, the tender L. Y. Spear will be leaving active service. Its commanding officer, Capt. John Paulson, invites former commanding officers and crew to join in the decommissioning ceremony Sept. 6 at the South Wall pier, Norfolk Naval Station. For more information contact Lt. Cadet Command, the parent organization of the Army ROTC program, hosted a retirement ceremony for its departing commanding officer Tuesday at Fort Monroe's Continental Park. Maj. Gen. James Lyle is retiring after more than 30 years in the Army. He will become the superintendent of Fishburne Military School in Waynesboro, Va.

The Military Sealift Command's combat stores ship Saturn deployed to the Mediterranean Sea on June 21, and the command's towing/salvage ship Mohawk deployed for six months in the Med on June 19.

CHANGE OF COMMAND

Capt. Erroll Brown relieves Capt. Robert Weaver as commanding officer of the Coast Guard Integrated Support Command in Portsmouth. Weaver is retiring from military service. Brown most recently served as chief of the budget division at Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington.
