A 10-year-old boy died Tuesday in a fire that may have started in the kitchen of a three-bedroom mobile home in the Magnet section of the county, the Sheriff's Department said.
Alfonzo Candice was at his grandparents' home in the 12000 block of Wrenn's Court when he was apparently overcome by heat and smoke inhalation, Sheriff C.W. Phelps said.
Two local volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze, which started about noon. The boy's grandmother was outside when the fire started. An aunt was asleep in a bedroom and woke up when she smelled smoke. Neither the aunt nor the grandmother was aware that the boy was sleeping in another room, Phelps said.
The exact cause of the fire is being investigated. The mobile home was destroyed.
