At first I didn't understand why Norfolk was pushing Virginia Beach to sign on to light rail, and then it came to me. What does Virginia Beach have that Norfolk would like to have? No, not water (Ha-Ha!) Answer: Tourists.
Commuters will not ride the light rail as conceived because it will take twice as long to get from the Oceanfront to downtown Norfolk.
Norfolk would love to have all those beachgoers come to downtown and save Nauticus and support McArthur Center if it is ever built.
After what Norfolk has done to Virginia Beach in the most-recent Lake Gaston dispute I wouldn't be eager to work with Norfolk on anything.
I hope our Virginia Beach City Council will turn thumbs down on the light-rail project and keep on pursuing the Lake Gaston pipeline, so we won't be held hostage by Norfolk any longer.
