Sprint Carolina Telephone's 1996 construction plan calls for spending $81.5 million in this area to serve its customers through improved digital call-processing equipment and new fiber-optic routes to handle long-distance calls.
The upgraded facilities will serve approximately 14,000 customer lines in the 331, 333, 335 and 338 telephone prefixes in the Elizabeth City exchange.
Additionally, a new fiber-optic route is being placed in Elizabeth City to ensure reliable long-distance calls.
``We have more than $1.7 billion invested in telephone service equipment and facilities in North Carolina,'' said Charlotte Underwood, Sprint's community relations manager. ``To continue to meet the growing telecommunications needs of our customers, we will spend approximately $148 million for construction this year.'' by CNB
