Prophet George Jones, 87, of the 1700 block of LaSalle Ave., died June 27, 1996, in Norfolk Health Care Center.
Mr. Jones, a retired self-employed farmer, was a native of Ivor, Va. He retired in 1984. He was the widower of Elsie L. Warren Jones and a member of St. Paul Holiness Church, Sedley, Va., where he was a former deacon. He was the son of the late Sara Jones and George Jones.
Survivors include a daughter, June S. Cross of Portsmouth; four sons, George P. Jones of Landover, Md., Joseph L. Jones of Riverdale, Md., Howard L. Jones of Hampton, James E. Jones Sr. of Norfolk; a sister, Lizzie Baker of Norfolk; a brother, Willie Jones of Norfolk; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Sunday in St. Paul Holiness Church, Sedley, by Elder Andrew Warren. Burial will be in Beulah Land A.M.E. Church Cemetery, Southampton County. The viewing will begin at 10 a.m. today. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Sunday. The family will assemble for the service at 11 a.m. for the Sunday procession at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas L. and June Cross of Portsmouth, 1718 LaSalle Ave., Portsmouth. Applewhite Funeral Home is in charge.
