A woman who is paddling a kayak from Florida to Maine to raise funds to fight breast cancer will bring her cause to the Norfolk waterfront this weekend.
Leigh Moorhouse, a 41-year-old kayak instructor from San Francisco, hopes to raise $200,000 for her cause this summer in a four-month trek that began April 14 in Key Largo, Fla., and is scheduled to end in mid-August in Eastport, Maine, after 2,100 miles by water.
Moorhouse expects to arrive in Norfolk some time Saturday evening from Nags Head, N.C. She intends to meet with other kayakers Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Hague in the Ghent section of Norfolk and then will arrive at the Waterside Marina at noon to display her kayak and information about her project, ``Live and Let Live.''
Proceeds, which are being raised through pledges based on the miles she travels, will go to the Breast Cancer Fund.
``In 1991, I lost a friend to breast cancer and was struck with a sense of urgency,'' she said. ``I still have my health and want to do something for those struggling against this disease.''
Moorhouse plans to paddle the West Coast next year, which she says would make her the only woman to travel both coasts by kayak. by CNB
