After 20 years as head of the Police Department, Chief Gilbert F. ``Spud'' Jackson cleared out his office Friday.
The departing chief's retirement takes effect midnight Sunday.
Jackson, 61, has 38 years' experience in law enforcement. He started as a patrolman with the Norfolk Police Department in 1958. In 1970, he helped start a police department in the former Nansemond County that merged with the city of Suffolk four years later.
Jackson, a Salisbury, N.C. native, was named chief of the combined departments in November 1976.
A graduate of Christopher Newport College and the FBI Academy, he has supervised 116 sworn personnel and 35 civilians.
His replacement has not been named.
A nationwide search garnered more than 100 applications. City Manager Myles E. Standish said he hopes to name a new chief by the end of July.
``The target is not so much a specific date but to get the right person,'' he said.
A panel of city staff members and citizens will help with the interview process, Standish said. As city manager, he will make the final selection.
He will announce on Monday who will be acting chief until a permanent department head is selected. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
