CITY HALL PHONES CHANGING TO 382

If you dial a City Hall number Monday, don't forget to use 382.

That's the new telephone prefix for all city departments.

Previously, city government phone numbers began with either 436 or 547. But that was confusing for callers, who sometimes couldn't remember which prefix to use.

GTE, the phone company which serves much of Chesapeake, reserved the prefix specifically for the city to help end the confusion.

The change will affect only the first three digits of city department phone numbers. The remaining four digits will stay the same.

The shift coincides with a change in the region's area code, from 804 to 757. Beginning Monday, callers are encouraged to use the new 757 code.

Beginning Feb. 1, callers will be required to use it. by CNB
