PORTSMOUTH - Maynard R. Hatcher, 83, died at his home Friday, June 28, 1996.

Mr. Hatcher was a member of Monumental United Methodist Church, where he had been one of the teachers of the West Bible Class and other classes. He was financial secretary of the church after he retired from Navy civil service. Mr. Hatcher was at one time very active in the Portsmouth Little Theater, a member of the Virginia Museums and others. He also was the author of a book, ``The Liberty Pole,'' published in 1987, numerous articles and stories in magazines, including several articles in Portsmouth's ``Olde Towne.''

He is survived by one daughter, Jeanne L. Brecht of Virgilina, Va.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Monumental United Methodist Church by the Rev. Raymond Edmonds and the Rev. Beverly Watkins. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery at a later date. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Monumental United Methodist Church Endowment Fund.
