BEACH'S NEW COUNCIL WILL BE SWORN IN TODAY

Virginia Beach's new council will be sworn in today at the regular City Council meeting, which begins at 2 p.m.

The only change in the council will be the return of former council member Reba S. McClanan, who beat Robert K. Dean in May to reclaim the Princess Anne Borough seat. McClanan gave up the seat four years ago to run unsuccessfully for the mayor's seat.

Mayor Meyera E. Oberndorf and council members Harold Heischober, Linwood O. Branch III and John A. Baum all won re-election in May and will be sworn in today. Only Oberndorf and Heischober will serve for four years. The other nine council members will stand for re-election in 1998.

W.D. Sessoms Jr., who has served as the council's vice mayor since 1992, is expected to be reappointed today.
