PHONE HOME WITH BRIGHT CELLULAR PHONES, PAGERS

Can we talk?

WHEN YOU'RE a well-dressed businesswoman, you need more than a black box for a cellular phone or pager.

Nokia and Motorola have introduced a line of colorful phones, with red being the hottest selling color. There also are textured looks, including tortoise, marble and wood grain. Pager cases also come in many colors.

GTE Mobilnet, which says that 68 percent of all portable phone sales are made to women, has accessories available at various Hampton Roads locations, ranging in price from $4.95 to $159. Bear midriff

If you haven't been keeping up with your ab crunches, get busy. Bare-midriff tops are the latest indicator that '70s fashion is back.

Tummy exposure is the latest way to keep cool and look hip this summer. Shown is graphite crop top with white trim, $34, and white acetate slacks, $44, both by XOXO. Sunglasses $16 by Incognito. All from Bahama Shop, Virginia Beach. Close encounters

If you're planning to live in shorts, bathing suits and short skirts this summer, a smooth look is key.

For shaving, Schick offers this advice:

Wet the area and apply shave gel or cream and let it sit three minutes.

Use a fresh blade. Change your razor every five to seven shaves to avoid nicks.

Start at the ankle and work up. Shave against the direction of hair growth. Around the bikini area, stroke down and out, avoiding repeated strokes. Use a nonirritating skin cream to soothe skin. African-American fashion designers

The National Association of Fashion and Accessory Designers, established in 1949 to give African-American fashion designers a vehicle to break into the industry of ethnic fashion, will hold its 47th annual convention at the Airport Hilton Hotel in Norfolk from July 7 to 13.

The convention will feature workshops, educational seminars and fashion shows.

On Saturday, July 13, many of the 100 participating designers will showcase their best garments and accessories of the year in a fashion show at the Hilton.
