In response to ``Third-grade literacy'' (letter, June 22): Timothy Minium, co-director of East Side Individual Tutoring, writes: ``Special-education students are not required to pass the Passport Literacy Tests, and these illiterates are still graduating.''
My daughter has been in a special-education class for three years. I have seen firsthand how hard special-education students work to the best of their ability to learn to read and write.
Reading and writing are very important parts of their daily learning.
I am proud of the children who work so hard everyday just to accomplish one small task. I am also thankful for the teachers who have the knowledge and patience to teach them.
Mr. Minium's statement shows a lack of knowledge about special-education programs. For him to label everyone who graduates from the special-education program illiterate shows me how little he knows!
