Dr. William Dixon Mayer died June 30, 1996, at the age of 67.
Dr. Mayer is survived by his wife, Donna Dashiell Mayer; two daughters, Elizabeth Bradshaw, her husband John and children Kelly and Katie of Roanoke, and Katherine Dashiell of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two sons, David Dixon Mayer, his wife Laura and children Lindsay and Kyle of St. Simon's Island, Ga., and William Dixon Mayer Jr. of Chesapeake; and family friend, Phyllis Long of Chesapeake.
Dr. Mayer received his A.B. degree from Colgate University in 1951 and his M.D. from the University of Rochester in 1957. Among the positions he held during his career were dean of the University of Missouri School of Medicine and director of the University Medical Center; chief medical director for Academic Affairs at the Veterans Administration; and president of the Medical College of Hampton Roads.
Dr. Mayer was a member of Galilee Episcopal Church where a memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. today by the Rev. Calvin G. Gardner. Interment will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the Eastern Virginia Medical School or a favorite charity. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, is handling arrangements.
