LYNN W. HOLMES

Lynn W. Holmes, of the 1000 block of Delaware Ave., died Sunday, June 30, at Obici Hospital.

A native of Marsheville, N.C., he was a member of West End Baptist Church and a member of the board of trustees for over 40 years. He was the founder of Russell & Holmes Shoe Stores. He was a member of the Suffolk Rotary Club and the Elks Lodge. He was a past director of the local Retail Merchants Association and voted ``Retailer of the Year'' on two occasions. He was a member of the State Retail Merchants and served on the board for two years. He served on the Norfolk Better Business Bureau for a number of years and served on the board of the Chamber of Commerce. He was member of various national shoe organizations of the American Shoe Industry. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Holmes is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mildred S. Holmes; a daughter, Lynnette Holmes Park and her husband, Dr. Richard A. Park; a son, David G. Holmes and his wife, Tracy P. Holmes; six grandchildren, Sherri G. Pritchard, Jay Gabbert, Michelle Gabbert, Kelly Plasse, Kim Holmes and Jenny Holmes; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Eva Lee Turner.

A funeral service was conducted Tuesday, July 2, at 2 p.m. by Dr. Richard A. Park and the Rev. T. Floyd Irby Jr. at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel. The family will receive friends at the home.

The family requests that flowers be omitted and that memorials be made to the Mildred and Lynn Holmes Scholarship Fund at Nansemond Suffolk Academy, 3373 Pruden Blvd., Suffolk, Va. 23434. Hill Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
