All city offices, courts and banks will be closed Thursday, which is Independence Day.

Garbage collection: For residents whose collection is Thursday: Portsmouth will collect a day early, on Wednesday. Chesapeake will collect on Saturday. Norfolk and Suffolk will collect on Monday, July 8. Virginia Beach will have regular collection.

Recycling collection: Routes normally collected on Thursday will be changed. Chesapeake's recyclables will be collected on Saturday; Suffolk's and Smithfield's will be collected Friday; Norfolk's will be collected Monday, July 8.

Postal service: There will be no regular service Thursday.

State offices: ABC stores will be closed Thursday. All branches of the Division of Motor Vehicles will be closed Thursday and will resume a normal schedule Friday.

Tidewater Regional Transit: Buses will run on a Saturday schedule. by CNB
