MAY COAL SHIPMENTS SLIP, BUT AHEAD OF LAST YEAR

Shipments of coal through the port of Hampton Roads slipped in May, but so far 1996 is outpacing 1995. May coal loadings at the port's three terminals dipped 4.2 percent to 4.2 million tons compared to May 1995, according to the Hampton Roads Maritime Association. So far in 1996, the terminals have loaded 22.2 million tons, 6.7 percent more than in 1995's first five months. Coal dumpings were dragged down by a weak month at Dominion Terminal Associates. Coal loadings at the Newport News terminal fell 17.8 percent to under 1.2 million tons in May. The region's largest terminal, Norfolk Southern Corp.'s Pier 6 at Lamberts Point in Norfolk, dumped 2.4 million tons of coal into waiting colliers in May, a 1.3 percent gain. (Staff) by CNB
