INDEPENDENCE DAY SCHEDULE OF FIREWORKS AND FESTIVALS

COROLLA

The Corolla 4th Annual Fireworks Festival and Fair will last from 3:30 p.m. until dark at the Whalehead Club. Several bands, including the Wilder Brothers at 2:30 p.m., Shore Fire at 4:30 p.m. and Bootleg at 6:30 p.m., are scheduled to perform throughout this afternoon. Other attractions include food sales, horse rides and games for children, such as a football toss and a dunking booth. Fireworks start at dark - probably between 9 and 9:30 p.m.

Parking is available at the Currituck Beach Lighthouse entrance for $5 per car. Admission is $1 per person for people who walk. All proceeds benefit the restoration of the Whalehead Club. Last year's celebration drew 18,000 people.

KILL DEVIL HILLS

Kill Devil Hills' fireworks display, the first in about a decade, will be held on the end of Avalon Pier, Milepost 6 off N.C. 12, over the Atlantic Ocean beginning about 8:45 p.m. The show is paid for by the town of Kill Devil Hills and area businesses. Spectators will be able to view this display from beaches throughout the town. The best view will not be at the end of the pier, but from distances on either side.

NAGS HEAD

Fireworks will be set off over the ocean from the Bonnett Street beach access, near Milepost 11.5 off N.C. 12, beginning about 9:25 p.m. and lasting about a half-hour. This town-funded event will be the first public fireworks display in Nags Head in more than a decade.

A one-mile section of N.C. 12 will be closed from 8:15 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. between Hollowell and Barnes streets to ensure safety during the display. Traffic will be re-routed along the U.S. 158 bypass. A limited amount of handicapped parking will be available at the Bonnett Street beach access. Other parking will be available on both sides of the beach road and in other beach accesses. Families are urged to walk to this event, if possible.

MANTEO

Manteo's annual July 4th celebration will begin at 1 p.m. on the Manteo Waterfront with a Wacky Tacky Hat contest, children's games, food, arts and crafts, musical entertainment and a street dance from 6 to 9 p.m., featuring the band Carolina Country.

Fireworks begin at 9 p.m.

HATTERAS

The annual fireworks display at Hatteras Village will be held tonight, capping Independence Day festivities.

The 9 p.m. show, sponsored by the Hatteras Village Civic Association and the Hatteras Volunteer Fire Department, will be held on the north end of Ramp 55 just past the ferry docks, at the south end of Hatteras Island. The show will last about a half hour.

A variety of other events, from arts and crafts to a fish fry, will be held all day at the marinas and in the businesses of Hatteras Village.

OCRACOKE

The third annual fireworks display will be held on the beach today, closing out a full day of July 4th family activities.

Funded by the Ocracoke Civic and Business Association and revenue from the island's occupancy tax, the display will be held on the National Park Service beach at 9:30 p.m. The beach is a half-mile north of Ocracoke Village. The show will last 20 minutes.

The celebration will kick off at 9 a.m. with a flag-raising ceremony at the school circle. Between 9:30 a.m. and noon there will be a sand sculpture contest at the public lifeguarded beach. At 10:30 a.m., a sky-diving demonstration will take place on the Pony Island Motel lawn. And at 1:30 p.m., Ben ``Blackbeard'' Cherry will do a one-man show at the National Park Service Amphitheater next to the visitors center. The Old Time Ocracoke Parade will take place at 3 p.m.

The Ocracoke Pony Petting Pen will be open at various times throughout the day.

The rain date for all activities is Friday.

ELIZABETH CITY

The Elizabeth City Jaycees will host the city's biggest bash yet, with its first pre-fireworks festival today at Waterfront Park. The holiday kicks off with a 3 p.m. parade, followed by live entertainment on two stages that feature bands, dancers and a little girls' beauty pageant. The day ends around 9 p.m. with fireworks over the Pasquotank River - this year set to music. The Jaycees have bought twice the usual amount of fireworks and will set them off from two different stages this year.

HERTFORD

The town of Hertford will hold its Perquimans Independence Day Celebration beginning at 6 p.m. at Missing Mill Park. The event is co-sponsored by the Hertford Chamber of Commerce and the American Legion.

EDENTON

The Optimist Club of Edenton will again host a 4th of July festival at the town's waterfront park. Events include food, entertainment and games that will begin at 5 p.m. Fireworks will be displayed once it gets dark, around 9 p.m. ILLUSTRATION: Color photo by DREW C. WILSON, The Virginian-Pilot
