FOR THE RECORD, Steely Dan's concert Saturday at the Virginia Beach Amphitheater is not their first Hampton Roads appearance. Two decades ago, when the single ``Do It Again'' was breaking, they opened for Elton John at Hampton Coliseum. Of course, Donald Fagen and Walter Becker haven't been on the road much since then, so the show will seem like a first. 8 p.m. Tickets: $19.75 to $34.75, plus parking and service charges; order at 671-8100. Info: 368-3000.

And there's more music this week. On Tuesday, the Amphitheater hosts Dwight Yoakam with David Ball. The country/rockabilly fest begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets: $14.75 to $27.75, plus parking and service charges. 368-3000. To order, call 671-8100.

Since he left his native Guatemala, artist Jose Orantes has seen his new home in Washington State with ojos de extranjero - a stranger's eyes.

Fresh visions by Orantes and nine other Latin American artists enliven the exhibit ``Reencounters: Expressions of Latino Identity in the Northwest of USA,'' on view through Aug. 18 at The Arts Center of the Portsmouth Museums, High and Court streets.

From vivid, patterned paintings to expressive carvings, the art strives to bridge culture gaps among people living in the Americas.

The downtown Portsmouth museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $1. Call 393-8543.

ANYDAY

John Travolta's charisma gets tested to the fullest with a movie with the challenging title ``Phenomenon,'' a comedy-romance-tragedy that deals with an everyday guy who gets zapped by a white light and becomes a genius. To his surprise, the townsfolk like him better when he was dumb, and couldn't memorize calculus books instantly. It's making a bid for the movie audiences who don't necessarily want explosions, but will it rise to its possibilities? A movie that deals with how people are comfortable with mediocrity has its challenges laid out for it. Kyra Sedgwick, Forest Whitaker and Robert Duvall co-star.
