``New Plays for Dog Days,'' the third annual festival of original plays, will open at the Generic Theater on Wednesday with two one-act comedies directed by Portsmouth residents.
Kathy Karbowski will direct ``A Night in the Men's Room'' and Eric Hardie will direct ``Real Human Dialogue.'' Both plays were written by Dean Monti, one of four playwrights competing in the third annual national competition.
Karbowski, a free-lance artistic director and costumer in film, theater and television, has a bachelor's degree in theater from the University of Iowa and a master's degree in communications from Regent University. She was artistic director for ``The Tie That Binds,'' which received a Golden Eagle Award in 1994.
Hardie, a graduate student at Regent, recently won an international Cine Eagle Award for ``Rabbit Trail,'' a short film he directed in 1995. The film took honors in a festival organized to give small budget films international exposure.
The comedies will be presented at 8 p.m. July 10-13, at 2 p.m. July 21 and again at 8 p.m. Aug. 8 for viewing by the competition judges.
Other plays to be presented during the festival include ``Eat Your Heart'' by Bob Boehler, July 17-21 and Aug. 10; ``Clown Speak'' by Nikki Harmon, July 24-28 and Aug. 9; ``A Mother's Death Wish'' by Jay Folb, July 31-Aug. 4 and Aug. 7.
The ``Top Dog'' award will be given to the show judged the best overall production and the ``Pick of the Litter'' award will be given to the best-written play.
