If you want to see the NBA's last two No. 1 draft picks on the same court, you could buy a ticket to a Philadelphia-Golden State game next season.
Or you could head tonight to Hampton University's Convocations Center, where Allen Iverson and Joe Smith are scheduled to meet in the second annual Boo Williams/ Hampton Roads Pro-Am Mid-summer Classic.
Iverson, from Hampton, was selected first in last week's draft by Philadelphia. Norfolk's Smith was selected No. 1 in 1995 by Golden State. The pair is scheduled to play in the second of two games at 9 p.m.
Last year's game, the Pro-Am's first-ever in Hampton, drew a crowd of 4,500. Iverson scored 41 points, while Smith had 40.
With a better supporting cast around the two stars this year, Pro-Am commissioner Wayne Hoffler is hoping for a better turnout.
``I want to sell this thing out,'' Hoffler said.
Joining Iverson on the A&G Auto team are Junior Burrough of the Boston Celtics and former Virginia star Cornel Parker. Smith's team, sponsored by Majestic Homes, will have former U.Va. Jason Williford and Yuri Barnes, as well as ex-Hampton star Jafonde Williams.
Bryant Stith of the Denver Nuggets and Corey Alexander of the San Antonio Spurs will coach the A&G Squad. Majestic Homes will be coached by former NBA star Bobby Dandridge.
Hoffler has invited J.R. Reid and Alonzo Mourning, although neither has committed to play. Invitations have also been extended to Chris Gatling and Malik Sealy, who are playing in a celebrity game in Hampton on Saturday night.
``If somebody walks in and wants to play, obviously, that's not going to be a problem,'' Hoffler said. ``Any pros that are in town are invited.''
The game will be preceded at 7 p.m. by a contest between Boo Williams' 18-and-under AAU team and a Pro-Am ``unlimited'' team made up of recent high school stars. The Boo Williams team will be led by All-Tidewater player Jason Capel, while the Pro-Am team will feature former Kecoughtan High stars Brett Harper and Marseilles Brown.
Tickets are $5.50. Proceeds benefit the Boo Williams Summer League and Pro-Am youth programs. by CNB
