FOUNDING ARTIST

A recent report in your newspaper incorrectly identified Charles Sibley, winner of the Irene Leache Award, as the founder of the art department at Old Dominion University (formerly the Norfolk Division of William and Mary and Virginia Professional Institute) some four decades ago.

During the mid '40s and '50s, M. Paula Mallery, head of the fine-arts department at the ``Division,'' was teaching such courses as painting and drawing, appreciation of the visual arts, basic design and commercial art. This was quite an active art department for a fledgling two-year junior college.

A lasting monument to Ms. Mallery's artistic talent may be seen in the 11 magnificent stained-glass windows she designed for Beth El Temple in Norfolk.
