Catherine D. Barton
CHARLOTTESVILLE - Catherine ``Betty'' Devitt Barton, 87, a resident of Our Lady of Peace Retirement Community, Charlottesville, was born into eternal life July 3, 1996, in a local nursing home.
Mrs. Barton was born to Joseph A. Devitt and Catherine McGinley Devitt, April 14, 1909, in Philadelphia, where she grew up and was educated in Catholic parochial schools.
She is survived by three daughters, Della B. Pestridge of Delanco, N.J., June B. Farrar of Lynchburg, Va., and Therese B. Bayse of Virginia Beach; one son, the Rev. Raymond A. Barton, pastor, the Catholic Church of the Holy Comforter, Charlottesville; 19 grandchildren; and 32 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, James Alex Barton, and their son, James Lenwood Barton. In addition to many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews in the Lynchburg area, she also has surviving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews and their wives in New Jersey and Virginia Beach.
Mrs. Barton lived most of her life in Lynchburg with her husband and children. Before retiring, she was employed as a clerk and cashier at the former Dutch Market, Piggly Wiggly Supermarket and Marshall's Fairway Market. She had been retired since 1976. In 1988, she moved to Virginia Beach, where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law before residing in Marian Manor, Virginia Beach. She moved to Our Lady of Peace Retirement Community, Charlottesville, in 1993.
She had been an active member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Lynchburg, and a member of the Ladies of Charity, the Church of the Holy Apostles, Virginia Beach; and the Church of the Holy Comforter, Charlottesville.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon, followed by the celebration of the Mass of the Resurrection at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 710 Clay St., Lynchburg, today. Interment will be in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Lynchburg. The family suggests memorial gifts to Our Lady of Peace Resident Endowment Fund, 751 Hillsdale Drive, Charlottesville, Va. 22901; or Church of the Holy Comforter, 208 E. Jefferson St., Charlottesville, Va. 22902. Hill and Wood Funeral Home is in charge.
