Firefighters Friday rescued four people in two separate fires in which smoke detectors provided early warnings.
At about 9:30 a.m., a mother in the 3400 block of Bruin Drive was awakened by a smoke alarm apparently activated after her 3-year-old set fire to the house by playing with a lighter.
Firefighters rescued the mother, the 3-year-old and a 2-year-old from the second floor of the house. They were treated for minor smoke inhalation at the scene.
About 12:15 p.m., a smoke alarm at a house in the 300 block of Dexter Street alerted an alarm company to a fire that had started when an elderly woman apparently left a pan on the stove, said Greg Orfield, an investigator with the fire marshal's office.
The 82-year-old woman was taken to Chesapeake General Hospital, where she was treated for smoke inhalation.
