ELIZABETH CITY SCHOOLS' ATHLETIC DIRECTOR LAUDED

JERRY MCGEE WILL RECEIVE A STATE AWARD OF MERIT FROM THE NATIONAL

INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETIC ADMINISTRATORS.

JERRY MCGEE, who has been serving the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Schools for 20 years, has received a national honor from his peers.

McGee, the athletic director for the Elizabeth City school system, has been selected by the North Carolina High School Athletic Directors Association as the 1996 recipient of the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) State Award of Merit.

The program recognizes one award winner from each of the 50 state athletic directors' associations. The State Award of Merit winners are selected based on their leadership and long-term contributions to interscholastic athletics at the local and state levels.

``I've become very active in the last five or six years,'' McGee said. ``I like to get involved with the state and national associations.''

McGee, who is also a member of the North Carolina High School Realignment Committee, said the NIAAA's 5,400 members set policy for high school athletics across the nation.

``They set the policy direction and sportsmanship for the whole country,'' he said.

McGee said he would not have time for state and national committees if it weren't for a decision that was made by former superintendent Travis Twiford to move him to the central office to become a full-time athletic director.

``I've been lucky enough to have the time and energy and seniority to get to the state and national level,'' McGee said last week. ``I'm really proud to represent Elizabeth City because you go out and stand up for your city and region. Many times we are overlooked and misrepresented.''

McGee also is a member of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association Board of Directors and is executive director of the North Carolina High School Athletic Directors Association. by CNB
